Does the violence a player experiences on a football
field breed a violent attitude and eventually violent
actions off the field? I wonder sometimes if it should be
a consideration, a topic for discussion given the
domestic public actions of a few players.
Strasburg-Jersey/">Stephen Strasburg Jersey . It is
true that in many - in fact I say the majority of
positions - on a team you have to internally develop an
intense insensitivity to hitting and being hit. It is
called football but it could be called hitball because
all you do is hit other people to get the ball and when
you have the ball you can expect to get hit. Ike Taylor
was going after the ball and got hit by his own guy, his
own teammate and broke his arm on Sunday night in
Carolina. I do wonder if year after year if it does not
change a person and their perception in an emotional
moment of right and wrong. Now this is not a
rationalization or excuse in regard to Ray Rice or others
but more an inquiry as to why an action is taken that has
such dramatic consequences. In my time as a player you
did come across a player of two where you had to wonder
if it was only a matter of time before the police would
be visiting his home. And among players it was looked at
as a weakness and with disdain, that on our team we had a
guy that could not control his temper and anger on the
field. Yes, a thought or comment was made that it was
just a matter of time that his attitude would get him in
trouble - truly a minority of people in the extreme. I do
think football can change you in personality and values.
Over time as a player you do need to switch on before you
play, switch off when you leave the field. Still I found
switching off very easy, switching on taking some
emotionally concentrated effort and purpose. One of the
aspects I enjoyed about playing football were the people
and the personality changes you saw from nice guy to not
so nice guy, amazing to watch and experience. And after
the game the not-so-nice guy was gone and the normal nice
guy returned. All the time? No, but almost all the time.
I do think that many of the issues facing the NFL are
very similar to the issues facing society. I am more
aware of meeting the wrong person at the wrong time in
daily life than I ever was in a football atmosphere.
Still, I cant help but wonder if the demands of the sport
dont warp the mind a little, and a little mind warping is
a lot. Again this is not to justify or create an excuse.
People I have spoken to all agree that the Rice incident
is shocking and repulsive but because it happened as time
moves on you do wonder why and how a man with so much to
lose in a moment would lose it all. I do believe that the
surrounding associations and environment you grow up in
just may be the biggest influence in life. It the case of
football because the aggressiveness and violence is
rewarded it may and can change you. It has logic. The
league will introduce programs and courses and hire
specialists and this and that. All good. Still players
also must realize whether it is football, boxing, hockey
or MMA the sport they are participating in is not the
norm. It is an event that has a beginning and ending that
need a temper or anger switch to be turned on and turned
off. Yes, hitting people can be a rush, but the rush has
to stay on a field, in a ring or on the ice. If it is,
then no problem. If it is not, big problem. Pro athletes
are not raving maniacs of evil intent, quite the
opposite. Yet, you do conclude that some handle the
demands better than others. And the demands can change
you at the most inopportune time. Not a rationalization,
just a theory.

Devon Johnson ran for a school record 272 yards with four
touchdowns and No.
Taylor-Jersey/">Michael Taylor Jersey .com) - The
Vancouver Canucks recovered from a fluke goal early last
time out to knock off one of the top teams in the league.

. Sure, Josh Browns 45-yard field
goal on the third drive of overtime lifted the New York
Giants to a 23-20 win over Detroit on Sunday. But the
Lions (7-8) dropped themselves out of the NFC North race
by losing five of their last six games, blowing fourth-
quarter leads in each setback.(SportsNetwork.com) - The
first-place Nashville Predators will try to match their
longest winning streak of the season when they shoot for
a fourth consecutive victory in Tuesdays home clash with
the Vancouver Canucks. The Predators, who lead the
Central Division by two points over Chicago, have been
the model of consistency during what has so far been a
superb showing in 2014-15. Nashville has yet to lose
consecutive games this season, but the clubs longest
winning streak is still a modest four-game run from Nov.
22-29. Nashville has earned its fourth three-game winning
streak of the campaign thanks to recent wins over
Carolina, Dallas and Minnesota. The Preds also are
currently on a 6-0-2 point streak that has the club in a
tie with Anaheim for the most points in the NHL with 60.
As a result of their strong showing so far, the Preds
will be well-represented at this seasons NHL All-Star
Weekend later this month in Columbus. One of the All-Star
teams will be led by Nashville head coach Peter
Laviolette, while his goaltender Pekka Rinne and
defenseman Shea Weber were named as All-Stars. Also,
forward Filip Forsberg was among six rookie skater chosen
to partake in the All-Star Skills competition on Jan. 24
at Nationwide Arena. The All-Star Game will be played on
Sunday, Jan. 25. Rinne is 28-6-2 with a sparkling 1.98
goals against average and .930 save percentage this
season and he came up with 36 saves to anchor Saturdays
3-1 win at Minnesota. Calle Jarnkrok and Colin Wilson
scored in the third period to help the Preds pick up the
win at Xcel Energy Center. Mike Fisher added an early
score for Nashville. Were going to have our off-nights,
but when we have those kind of games we still find a way
to win. Thats why were at where were at, Wilson said.
Nashville is kicking off a brief two-game homestand
tonight when it aims for a sixth consecutive win at
Bridgestone Arena. All told, the Preds boast a 16-2-1
record on home ice this season. They willl complete the
homestand Friday against Washington when former Nashville
coach Barry Trotz returns to Bridgestone Arena.

. . Trotz was the head coach for
the Predators for 15 seasons from the franchises
inception until he was let go at the end of last season.
The Canucks enter the second of three meetings this
season against Nashville having dropped two of the past
three encounters. Vancouver lost a 3-1 home decision to
the Preds on Nov. 2, with Forsberg posting two goals and
an assist and Rinne stopping 26-of-27 shots for the win.
Vancouver has fared well in Music City, however, claiming
three straight and five of the past six meetings at
Bridgestone Arena. The Canucks are 12-6-2 as the visiting
club this season and are kicking off a five-game road
trip tonight. The Canucks went 2-3-0 on a recent five-
game homestand and lost the final two tilts of the
residency against Florida and Calgary. The most recent
setback came in Saturdays 1-0 defeat at the hands of the
Flames, who saw Joni Ortio make 36 saves to record a
shutout in his first start of the season. Mikael Backlund
also provided the game-winning goal on Calgarys first
shot. Eddie Lack saved all but one of the 23 shots he
faced in the loss. Sometimes you play well and dont win,
that was tonight, Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins
said. Ryan Miller will start tonight for Vancouver and he
is expected to face Rinne. Miller is 5-2-1 with a 2.17
GAA in eight career outings against the Predators, while
Rinne is 6-7-1 with a 2.74 GAA when playing against
Vancouver. The Canucks, who are tied with San Jose for
the third automatic playoff bid in the Pacific Division,
will continue their swing on Thursday when they visit the
Philadelphia Flyers. Vancouver could get defenseman Dan
Hamhuis back at some point during this trip, but he is
expected to miss tonights contest. Hamhuis has been out
since suffering a groin injury on Nov. 20, missing
Vancouvers last 20 games.
